MMS on iPhone issues
After only 2+ years of waiting, AT&T/Apple finally let us have MMS messaging on our iPhones in the U.S. The process for activation was pretty straightforward. Plug your phone into your computer, open iTunes, check for updates, get update, reboot phone, and you’re done. The first couple days had some delays in the sending and receiving of messages, but that was to be expected.
What I did not expect were some of the quirks with the messaging.
The first example was a text sent to my brother. I sent a picture of my son, and when I wanted to put text beneath it, as if it were the same message, it sent the two separately. When he responded, I got a text with just the “Re:”, then another text that had the message. Problem was, his message quoted my message and I got all of the meta information that I don’t care about. He is a Verizon Wireless customer using a Blackberry Curve 8330. This is a new problem, as I’ve never seen his texts come across like that before.

Another example is several photos sent by my sister-in-law. I get what appears to be a double message. The first line says “New Message”, then the picture shows up directly beneath it. She is on Sprint using some generic flip-phone.

I did not have any issues with messages to/from my wife, who is also on AT&T with a Blackberry Curve 8310 or with any other iPhone users. My main concern, not so much for myself (unlimited texting) is for people who have a set amount of text messages in their plan. If these quirks are causing double billing for what should be single text messages, someone is going to have to fix that asap.
I’m not sure if other users are running into anything like this, but I’m curious to find out.
As far as how well it works, it’s just like every other feature on the iPhone. It’s simple and effective. If I had a 3GS, I’d be moving some videos around as well, but that’s a feature for next year when it’s time for an upgrade.
